Recently, the China-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Universities Rowing Race 2019 and Rowing Dynamometer Competition were successfully held at Tianjin University’s Gymnasium. The competition attracted more than 100 athletes of 11 teams from 7 universities at home and abroad.
Yang Xiaochun, deputy director of the Chinese and Foreign Humanities Exchange Center of the Ministry of Education of China, Hou Chunxing, Counsellor of the Malaysian Embassy in China, Yaya Sutarya, Education Specialist of the Indonesian Embassy in China, Shen Jiacong, Head of the Tianjin Student Rowing Federation, former Deputy Secretary General of Tianjin Municipal Government, Zhang Huaquan, Director of the Department of Sports and Art Tianjin Education Commission, and Gong Jinlong, Vice President of Tianjin University attended the opening ceremony.
Yang Xiaochun, Hou Chunxing and Gong Jinlong delivered speeches as part of the opening ceremony.
In his speech, Yang Xiaochun first expressed his congratulations on the organization of the competition on behalf of the Chinese and foreign cultural exchange centers of the Ministry of Education. He welcomed the young students from the ASEAN countries and thanked the organizing committee and volunteers for their work. He looked back at the long history of exchanges between China and ASEAN countries, and reviewed the consensus and mechanism for cooperation and exchanges and achievements made by the two sides in various fields under the goal of building the "China-ASEAN Destiny Community". He noted that the Chinese and Foreign Humanities Exchange Center of the Ministry of Education is a specialized agency for promoting the coordinated development of Chinese and foreign humanities and exchanges. The goal is to serve as a cultural exchange mechanism for talents, help open the education to the outside world, and serve the "Belt and Road" international cooperation and build a community of human destiny. “The Center is willing to work with students and the community to promote the development of Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges in the future.” Yang said.
On behalf of the Malaysian Embassy, Hou Chunxing expressed his gratitude to Tianjin University for organizing this competition. In his speech, he said that in the past few years, the Education Office of the Malaysian Embassy has been in close contact with Chinese universities to promote regional higher education cooperation. He specifically mentioned that Tianjin University has made efforts and contributions in this regard. He said that the ACENT EngTech (ASEAN-China Network for Cooperation and Exchanges among Engineering and Technology Universities) established by Tianjin University and the China-ASEAN Smart Ocean Center established by the School of Marine Science and Technology provided very effective platforms for Educational research collaboration with ASEAN Universities. He hoped that this rowing competition could serve to further enhance the friendship between China and ASEAN universities and deepen mutual exchanges and cooperation.
On behalf of Tianjin University, Gong Jinlong delivered sincere welcome and heartfelt thanks to all guests. He declared that under the guidance of the “Belt and Road Initiative”, Tianjin University would support the development of the China-ASEAN Smart Ocean Center and provide wider platforms for cooperation and exchange between China and ASEAN universities in the future. “We will seek more opportunities for athletic and cultural exchange to promote cooperation and exchanges in personnel training, scientific research, and cultural exchanges.
The competition consists of 4 individual competitions and mixed relay team competitions. In the women's 500m race, Supawadee Roopmoh from Mahidol University in Thailand won the first prize with a score of 1:44:8min.
Li Kerun and Li Yuxi from Tianjin University won the championship of the men and women 1000m races respectively while Wan Xiaohang from the Tianjin Polytechnic University won the men's 2000m race championship. Ten teams from three countries joined the 8-minute mixed relay of men and women. The team from the Mahidol University of Thailand won the championship, the Tianjin University team came in second and Tiangong University took third place.
The teams from Tianjin Normal University, Tianjin University and the Mahidol University won the top three team championships. A simple and solemn award ceremony was held on the spot.
In order to popularize the traditional Olympic sport of rowing, Tianjin University has held a series of sports cultural exchange activities such as special cultural lectures, dynamometer fitness training events, rowing culture experience activities and sports competitions.
