The School of Marine Science and Technology (briefly named as SMST in Tianjin University) was established in April 2014. The orientation of TJU is to build a world-class university with TJU characteristics. The School has fully utilized the top information industry, strictly strengthened morality education, actively insisted in the orientation of “demand-oriented, development-scientific and technological, characteristic-distinctively” to build SMST as a world level and world famous school.

　　It has a high quality faculty of 52，among whom 40 are teachers, with 13 professors, 9 associate professors and 18 lecturers. Among these faculty, 2 are double employed academicians, 1 top scientist of the national “973 project”, 1 teacher selected by national New Century Millions of Talents Program, 2 recipients of New Century Excellent Talents supported by the Ministry of Education, and 3 specially invited experts by Tianjin municipality. At present, the School is still bringing talents with various channels.

　　In 2015, Marine Technology (BEng, 4-year-schooling) was set up by Ministry of Education’s approval. In 2017, Marine Technology (master program) was set up as the second-level discipline. In 2018, Marine Science (BS, 4-year-schooling) was approved by Ministry of Education. The School is currently providing a diverse range of programs at differing levels, including 1 first-level discipline (Marine Science), and 2 second-level disciplines (Marine Environmental Dynamics and Marine Technology). According to the Plan of Discipline Construction of building first-class university of TJU, Marine Science is one of the three key disciplines in the field of environmental ecology.

　　With more than five years of developing, SMST offers the intellectually rigorous environment, dynamic culture, and unique opportunities of research and study. The mission of the School is to serve the society by educating marine professionals with good knowledge, innovational mind, global vision and competiveness. With the teaching idea of “information, instantiation, internationalization”, a complete education system, which is data-oriented, system-rounded for producing undergraduates，postgraduates on master's and doctoral programs has been established. 2 museums (the Museum of Marine Cognition and the Museum of Marine Videos), 7 labs (Lab of Marine Detection Technology, Lab of Marine Remote Sensing Technology, Lab of Marine Positioning Technology, Lab of Marine Survey Engineering, Lab of Marine Data Engineering, Lab of Marine Chemistry, Lab of Marine Physics) are arranged to address the growing demand of teaching and practicing. Many of the activities of the School are dovetailed well into the interests of the marine related sections, such as State Oceanic Administration (SOA), Maritime Safety Administration of the People’s Republic of China (MSA) and Marine Information Technology Centre. 1 boat (Sea Patrol-1505) and 1 base (Chudao Marine Observation Base) are established for training in scientific research, scholastic, educational and service activities. By perfecting the Virtual Reality (VR) Experimental Platform and the Immersion Teaching-Practicing System, the School insists on focusing the education of our students' practicing ability, strengthening the recognition of the ocean, holding various field practices to shorten the distance between the theory and the application.

　　The School provides guidance and suggestion for the students both in academia and practice. As the achievements of bachelor-supervisor program, our students have won awards from National Challenge Cup Competition, Tianjin-Challenge-Cup Competition, World Intelligent Congress (Underwater Robot Challenge), Beidou Navigation Application Design Competition, College Students Mathematical Modeling Contest (US). The social survey teams organized by the students of our School have also won Tianjin-Excellent-Social-Survey-Team Honor continuously. Being equipped with strong basic knowledge，all round capability，creativity and practical ability，graduates from our School are extraordinarily popular among the marine field.

　　The School has established scientific and educational cooperation with National “973 Program”, National key research and development program, Science Foundation of Ministry of Education of China, National Science Foundation of China and other awards from both the national and local governments on over 90 programs. The School has been honored with the award of Tianjin Technology Invention and the gold medal of Tianjin Invention. The School has also established Tianjin Port Environmental Monitoring Engineering Center, leaded Tianjin University (Jinnan District) Innovation Academy and Applied Marine Branch of China Marine Development Academy.

　　The School makes great effort to seize the chance of “China’s Strategy of Maritime Power” and the “Belt and Road Initiative” to build it into the first-rate and research-oriented school, it has established ASEAN-China Marine Cooperation Fund Project, Indonesia-China Human Culture Cooperation Project, ASEAN-China Smart Ocean Center, Indonesia-China Smart Ocean Center, ASEAN-China Smart Ocean Student Innovation Course Program, ASEAN-China Ocean Beidou Technology Seminar and ASEAN-China Universities Rowing Program were held successfully. The School has been also offered 2 Talented Young Scientists Programs (TYSP); Unistrong Scholarship has also been set up to sponsor the brilliant students. There are also many other cooperation with universities, organizations and enterprises in different regions of the world, included but limited to MIT(US), TUM(DE), UHH(DE), National Environment Department(CA), UQuebec(CA), ULeigh(US), NTU(SG), UMahidol(TH), BUU(TH), UM(MY), UTM(MY), UMT(MY), UNIZG(HR), ITS(ID), ITERA(ID).
