China-ASEAN Smart Ocean International Student Innovation Course Program Launched

On June 17, 2019, China-ASEAN Smart Ocean International Student Innovation Program, hosted by the School of Marine Science and Technology of Tianjin University launched its opening ceremony in the Science Library on Weijin Road Campus.

Zhang Jianqing, Director General of the International Cooperation and Exchange Division of the Tianjin Education Commission delivered the opening remarks. Zhang extended a warm welcome to teachers and students from ASEAN universities. He said that in the new era, Tianjin is facing a historical opportunity to open up education to the outside world, and Tianjin carries a unique mission in promotingthe Belt and Road Initiative and the “Community with a Shared Future for Humanity”. In recent years, the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission has supported and held a series of international student exchange programs, to which Tianjin University made great contributions by leading the establishment of the China-ASEAN Engineering University Alliance. Tianjin University’s School of Marine Science and Technology (SMST) takes smart ocean education as the starting point, promotes the smart ocean project to become the brand of China-ASEAN education cooperation, and effectively strengthens the substantive cooperation between China and ASEAN in personnel training and scientific research. Zhang hoped that through the International Student Innovation Program, China-ASEAN would continue to explore ways of quality education cooperation. “In the future, the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission will strive to support the development of full-time international students through establishing government scholarships, and accelerate the vertical development of educational cooperation”, Zhang proclaimd.

Liu Ning, the Assistant President of Tianjin University said in his speech that Tianjin University has entered the new stage of talent cultivation within the emerging engineering education background.Cultivating international leading talents with a global vision are powerful ways for Tianjin University to promote emerging engineering development. Taking this opportunity, SMST established the China-ASEAN Smart Ocean Center and the China-Indonesia Smart Ocean Center, and launched the Smart Ocean International Student Innovation Program, providing a pragmatic platform for cooperation and exchange between China and ASEAN universities.

Zhai Jingsheng, Dean of SMST, introduced the “China-ASEAN” Smart Ocean Education Center. He mentioned that this project is the second phase of the China-ASEAN Smart Ocean Innovation Course. Compared with the first phase, the project expands the study time and enriches curriculum. He expected the students to enjoy the three-month exchanges.

Thanirinfrom Mahidol Universityin Thailand spoke as a representative of the students. She expressed her gratitude to attend the China-ASEAN Smart Ocean International Student Innovation Program. She said that she expected to gain more knowledge about marine science and get to know China at the same time.

According to Gong Le, Associate Dean of SMST, the project consists of marine frontier theoretical and experimental courses, cultural courses such as Chinese painting and calligraphy, and practical training courses including visits to China’s national maritime institutions.
