China-ASEAN Smart Ocean International Student Innovation Course Program Concludes

From June to September, 2019, Tianjin University’s School of Marine Science and Technology (SMST) successfully hosted around 30 students fromcountries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to participate in the “China-ASEAN Smart Ocean International Student Innovation Course Program” (CASOISICP). The course successfully concluded on April, 30th and the closing ceremony was held at the Conference Building of Tianjin University (TJU). Over 200 faculties and students from ASEAN countries and SMST attended the ceremony.

ASEAN Students Giving Presentations

During the ceremony, ASEAN students delivered presentations about what they had learned from this program and their insights to major marine issues.

Wei Kexin, Deputy Director of China-ASEAN Smart Ocean Center, spoke highly of students’ final presentations. “Through your presentation, we can see that you have a large stock of marine science knowledge, and you are very ingenious in carrying out the research about country-based marine development comparison.” Wei said. Wei hoped that all the students could become the bridge of friendship between China and ASEAN youths, bringing their wonderful memory in Tianjin back to their own country and bringing more ASEAN students to China.



ASEAN Students Getting Certificate

Dujnapa Tanundet, a student from Mahidol University, Thailand, spoke on behalf of the participants of the training program. She said that although the three-month training period was very short, she was very fulfilled, in that she not only attended the Smart Ocean related courses, but also got to know the history and culture of China. “Because of the program, I witnessed the rapid development of China's marine industry and profoundly understood China's lofty ideal of building maritime community with a shared future. After returning to Thailand, I will try to introduce China to Thai people as genuinely as possible.” Dujnapa Tanundet expressed her gratitude to all the faculty and staff of SMST who had put great efforts into holding this project.

Pan Delu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Zhang Lixin, Assistant Principal of Tianjin University, delivered speeches respectively in praise of ASEAN students, faculty and staff of SMST. Pan Delu said, “Building a smart ocean is consistent with the interests of China and those of ASEAN countries. China-ASEAN Smart Ocean Center provides a best platform for China to cultivate marine talents who are the most important factor for building a smart ocean. Students should make the best use of this platform, develop a smart ocean together and contribute to building a maritime community with a shared future.” Zhang Lixin stated that SMST had coined a new model of cultivating international talents, improved the quality of international talent training for Tianjin University and promoted the integration of China and ASEAN teaching concepts through CASOISICP. “I hope that this program could offer ASEAN students an opportunity to further their cooperation and communication with Chinese students”, he said.

"China-ASEAN Smart Ocean International Student Innovation Course Program" provides an excellent opportunity for ASEAN students to experience the vibrant city of Tianjin and the academic life at Tianjin University, while learning from experienced professors in marine field. ASEAN students have the chance to attend specially designed training course which combines marine technology and marine science related courses, experiments, and practical teaching, with Chinese traditional culture and language courses.
